Na Na Na Na, Na Na Na Na, Hey Hey-ey, Goodbye

So what should they play when you pass away?  Haven’t thought much about it?  Me neither.  It’s my wife who throws out a “When I die” question ever so often.  I usually try to change the subject, but this morbid blog idea came from her latest Facebook update.  I’m not a Facebooker, but I’ve often been accused of being a Facebook moocher (and will be until my wife changes her password), and this is what I found on her current FB status:

In case Jason forgets, when I die, I would like “Jesus Paid It All” sung at my funeral by the Ebenezer House Band…..in fact, go ahead and sing it twice:)

Well, hopefully we won’t have to worry about funeral planning until we’re both old, shriveled, and wrinkled, but I do agree, if the Lord calls soon there’s no better worship band to play a Spirit-filled farewell song than our’s at Ebenezer Baptist in Toccoa, GA.  Matter of fact, they can perform mine too, and I’ll go ahead and put my request in writing:

I’ll take the Chris Tomlin version of “I Stand Amazed” (How Marvelous).  Often when the EBC worship band leads the congregation in this updated hymn I have to close my eyes as I feel like I’m praying instead of singing.  The Lord says to worship “in Spirit and in truth,” and this song always make me feel like I’m involved in both.  So like my wife mentioned above, go ahead and sing it twice (but I would like something by Johnny Cash or Randy Travis snuck in between.)

So now, if you dare, the question goes to the reader.  You may not want to think about it, but I believe it’s time to put it in writing so your request will at least be saved in cyber-space for all cyber-eternity.  What will the mourners hear at your so-long party?…Some crooning Country?…Something rock’n?…Sweet and righteous?  We need to know…WHAT SONG OR SONGS WOULD YOU LIKE PERFORMED AT YOUR FUNERAL?

  1. My two? “I Can Only Imagine” and “So Long, Farewell” So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, good night
I hate to go and leave this pretty sight
So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodbye
I leave and heave a sigh and say goodbye — Goodbye!
I’m glad to go, I cannot tell a lie
    I flit, I float, I fleetly flee, I fly
The sun has gone to bed and so must I
So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodbye
    Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye

  2. OK, I’ll admit it. This is one of those questions I pose on occasion. My choices, by the Ebenezer Praise Band, of course: “Take My Hand, Precious Lord”…”Amazing Grace” (My Chains are Gone)…and a song that I hope will bring comfort to others, “It Is Well with My Soul.” My Granny Jane keeps her funeral arrangements in her purse, where she can take them out and make changes as needed. She might cross off a pallbearer’s name (if they make her mad…or die before her), or she might change a song or singer. Now that I’ve made this known, I see no need to carry this info around in my purse. Just be sure to tell Chad.
